JDO Academy
A Juvenile Detention Officer (JDO) ensures the safety and security of youth in detention facilities across the state of Florida. As a highly responsible position, JDOs often serve as positive role models that supervise youth in the Department's care.
The JDO Academy is 3 week course that takes place at one of the many locations in the North, Central, and South Regions.
To obtain a JDO certification, candidates must complete two phases of training:
- Pre-Academy Training consists of 120 hours of computer-based and instructor-led training
- Academy Training consists of 120 hours of instructor-led training and a certification exam
Detention Academy topics include: Professionalism & Ethics, Motivational Interviewing, Leadership and Team Building, Rehabilitative Justice, Adolescent Development, Interpersonal and Effective Communication, Conflict Management, Trauma Informed Care, Saftey/Security/Supervision of Youth, Avoiding Red Flag Behavior, Admissions and Transfers, Releases, Report Writing, Behavior Management Systems, Health Care, PREA, Mental Health & Substance Abuse, Suicide Prevention, Human Trafficking, Stress Management & Wellness
