Authority and Responsibilities
The Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention Act of 1974 (JJDPA), as amended, requires each state to establish an advisory group, appointed by the governor. The SAG is created to participate in the development and review of the state's JJDPA plan and to carry out the functions specified in the JJDPA.
The JJDP State Advisory Group's (SAG) responsibilities include the following:
• Operate as the advisory board to the DJJ for the purpose of implementing the JJDPA in Florida, prepare the state’s plan, and perform other requirements mandated by the JJDPA with fidelity.
• Members should make every attempt to attend quarterly, full- and half-day meetings, and actively participate in assigned committees and corresponding conference calls.
• DJJ may approve funding for SAG members’ future participation in approved conferences, research, and workshops based on individual member participation.
• Review and submit recommendations to the governor and legislature related to the SAG’s functions, including state compliance with requirements of the JJDPA and other SAG concerns every two years.
• Review and comment on all SAG grant applications submitted for funding through the JJDPA. Develop procedures for SAG's involvement that address the request for proposals, review of proposals and the recommended funding process for all projects funded by JJDPA funds.
• Monitor the state's compliance with the requirements of the JJDPA.
• Develop a procedure regarding the promotion of community partnership and delinquency prevention programs addressing the development of educational, training, research, prevention, diversion, treatment, and rehabilitative programs for the Florida juvenile justice system.
• Review the progress and accomplishments of SAG projects funded under the state plan.
• Regularly seek comments, recommendations, and opinions from at-risk, transitional, foster care youth, and juveniles currently under the jurisdiction of the juvenile justice system.
